Fear is not bad, nor is it opposite to love, fallen, or unspiritual. Fear is essential for surviving and flourishing in life. What is unhealthy is responding inappropriately to fear or not making use of fear in an integrated way.

Love needs fear to sustain its flourishing. Fear, anxiety, and panic keep us safe and grounded in love. They support us to make wise decisions. They teach us not to forget to take care of ourselves–our bodies, emotions, relationships, and finances. Safety is a real human need, on all layers of our being.

Fear is an alert frequency. If we let go of all fear, disaster is inevitable. Fear does not attract disaster; it helps us avoid it. Any ideology, religion, or spiritual teaching that circumcises fear weakens the potencies of love and life.

Fear only runs contrary to love when it is out of balance. Fear gone out of control is like an autoimmune disorder–it attacks the parts of ourselves that seek expansion and creative fulfillment in a last-ditch effort to keep us alive.

When fear runs the whole show, we are unconscious to love. Too much fear shuts down our connection to love.

When we are chronically overwhelmed by fear or fear-based ideologies and ways of thinking, that is a red dashboard light indicating something else is going on under the hood.

When fear runs amuck, that is your body’s natural alert system. There could be a physical problem or an unresolved emotional issue–something crying out to be addressed so you can live safely and freely.

Fear is not meant to be our primary operating system. It is useful for survival, safety, and making wise decisions but not for creativity, connection, and self-actualization–not by itself that is. Fear cannot operate alone–it needs to operate in sync with our other parts and needs.

Fear does support creativity, connection, and self-actualization when it is integrated with the other aspects of our being. For instance, if you balance your creative enterprising with your healthy fear, then your creativity will be supported and enhanced by your level-headed decision-making.

Fear has an essential role in supporting love. We risk losing loved ones, relationships, and our own wellbeing when we ignore our fears and live recklessly and unwisely.

In an integrated bodymind, all our emotions and internal parts (inner child, protector, inner adult, etc.) have essential roles to play. They only become problematic when our system is out of balance, which is usually a function of unresolved traumas or developmental blockages. Excessive fear is a clarion call for healing, coming out of unconsciousness, and opening our hearts to more lovingkindness.

Do not let go of fear in your search for healing and wholeness. Neither can be obtained without it. Life without fear is bondage to suffering in another form, not liberation from it. Fear is neither better nor worse than serenity. Both poles of every emotional duality have a role to play in a healthy, vibrant life. Wholeness and vitality mean opening to the full spectrum of life under the sun.
